GUAJILLO Berlandier Acacia
Acacia beriandieri - Mimosaceae, Mimosa Family


DESCRIPTION: 

  • Small, usually multistemmed tree with feathery foliage; twigs frequently armed with short prickles.

  • Height: 9-15 feet.

  • Flowers: Fragrant, creamy-white, round heads; spring and after rains.

  • Fruit: Thick-walled pod.

  • Foliage: Deciduous, delicate, fernlike appearance.

  • Bark: Tan (when young) to gray, with shallow fissures and broad, flat ridges.

  • Growth rate: Medium.


REQUIREMENTS:

  • Sun: Partial shade to full sun.

  • Soil: Any.

  • Drainage: Well-drained.

  • Water.- Low.

  • Maintenance: Little needed.

  • Propagation: Fresh semi-green seed.


NATIVE HABITAT: 

Brush-grasslands. Most abundant in Hidalgo and Starr Counties.


WILDLIFE USE: 

Foliage used for cover, shade and browse by wildlife and livestock; excellent nectar source.


COMMENTS: 

Plant in a small area to appreciate the light shade and fragrant
blossoms.
